About IVF Process

During the IVF procedure, mature eggs are collected and fertilised using a semen sample in a lab. Then the fertilised eggs or the embryo is transferred to the uterus, and pregnancy is achieved with minimal side effects. One full IVF cycle requires at least three weeks. However, sometimes these steps are divided into several procedures that might take longer.

Understanding the IVF Process

IVF is not a singular event but a series of carefully orchestrated procedures. The process can be broken down into key steps, each contributing to the overall success of the treatment.

Step 1: Doctor Consultation

Embarking on the IVF journey begins with an initial consultation. This three-fold process involves:

  • Evaluation of Medical History: Our skilled medical team assesses both partners’ medical history to gain insights into potential factors affecting fertility.
  • Thorough Diagnosis: Detailed diagnostic assessments are conducted, leading to a precise understanding of your fertility situation. This stage helps determine the most suitable IVF approach for you.
  • Financial Clarity: Our dedicated team discusses the costs involved in the IVF procedure, ensuring transparency in financial matters.
Step 2: Preparation for the Procedure (2-4 Weeks)

This stage involves a battery of pre-IVF tests that provide a comprehensive picture of your fertility health. These tests include blood work, semen analysis, ultrasounds, and infectious disease screenings. These tests lay the foundation for personalized treatment planning.

Step 3: Medication and Monitoring (Week 5)

Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) is initiated at this stage, involving two crucial aspects:

  • Fertility Medication: Medications are administered to stimulate the ovaries, encouraging the maturation of multiple eggs.
  • Ongoing Monitoring: Frequent visits to the clinic ensure that egg development is monitored closely, with ultrasound assessments confirming progress.
Step 4: Triggering, Egg Retrieval, and Fertilization

This phase involves three pivotal stages:

  • Egg Retrieval: The eggs are retrieved under sedation, ensuring a comfortable experience.
  • Fertilization: Fertilization occurs in the lab, where eggs and sperm are combined. Techniques like Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and assisted hatching enhance success rates.
  • Embryo Evaluation: Embryos are carefully evaluated, and methods such as Preimplantation Genetic Screening are employed to maximize the likelihood of successful implantation.
Step 5: Embryo Transfer

Embryo transfer is a pivotal moment in the journey. The embryo is gently placed into the uterus, often a painless procedure. Patients may opt for transfer after three days or wait for the blastocyst stage (around five days after fertilization) for enhanced success.

Preparation and Expectations

Before the IVF treatment, various tests, lifestyle adjustments, and medication routines need to be followed. These steps are integral to ensuring the success of the IVF process.

What To Expect After IVF Treatment

After embryo transfer, emotions can run the gamut from anticipation to anxiety. Patience becomes a virtue as you await the results of the procedure.

When a man’s sperm is unable to fertilise an egg despite IVF, a specialised treatment known as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection ICSI is used. This procedure improves the couple’s chances of becoming pregnant. Male infertility caused by low sperm count, low motility, azoospermia, erectile dysfunction, or infertility with no clear cause may be treated using this treatment.

It aids in the treatment of infertility issues such as:
  • Artificial insemination (intrauterine insemination [IUI]) or IVF are not possible since the male spouse generates insufficient sperm.
  • It’s possible that the sperm won’t migrate normally.
  • It’s possible that the sperm will have problems adhering to the egg.
  • Sperm may not be able to leave the male reproductive system due to a blockage.
  • Traditional IVF has failed to fertilise eggs, regardless of sperm quality.
  • Eggs that have been developed in vitro are being used.
  • Eggs that had previously been frozen are being utilised
FAQ
What is the difference between IVF and ICSI?
The way the sperm fertilises the egg is the main difference between IVF and ICSI. The egg and sperm (of which there are many) are left in a petri dish to fertilise on their own during IVF. In ICSI, one sperm is directly injected into the egg.

How ICSI can help in infertility?
ICSI is a IVF that is used primarily for the treatment of severe cases of male-factor infertility. ICSI involves the injection of a single sperm directly into a mature egg.

Does IVF lead to genetically defective babies?
While there is no statistically significant evidence for the same, associated procedures such as preimplantation genetic testing ensure that only the genetically robust embryos are used for implantation.

When is IUI recommended?
IUI is recommended when couples experience unexplained infertility as well as cervical hostility in the female patient and male infertility. When these conditions impact the ability of sperms to enter through the cervix into the uterus and fertilise the egg, IUI is the preferred treatment option.
